In honor of Topeka, Kansas’ move last month to temporarily rename itself “Google” (it wants the company’s new fiber optic internet) Google has decided to repay the favor and has renamed itself “Topeka.” In a press release that went live on the Topeka blog at 12:01 AM on April Fool’s Day, the company unveiled the news, citing a “kinship… with this fine city at the edge of the Great Plains” as motivation. “The word ‘topeka’ itself derives from a term used by the Kansa and Ioway tribes to refer to ‘a good place to dig for potatoes,’” company explained, “we’d like to think that our website is one of the web’s top places to dig for information.” Topeka executives also tested out proper usage of the new name, stating that while “Before our blind date I did a Topeka search on him.” is acceptable, while “Before our blind date I topeka’d him.” isn’t.
